Centenary Trees: The Memory of Amazonian Giants

The OjoPúblico investigation titled "Centenary Trees: The Memory of Amazonian Giants" exposes the alarming overexploitation of ancient tree species in the Peruvian Amazon, such as shihuahuaco and tornillo, whose hardwood is highly prized on the global market. Between 2010 and 2020, over 700,000 of these slow-growing trees were officially logged—some of which take centuries to mature. Despite clear evidence of environmental impact, Peruvian authorities have been slow to update the list of endangered tree species, putting the survival of these ecological giants at serious risk.
